By Granny,on January 3rd,2011 I make the same resolution every year. “This year,I will learn something new”. Recently I was surfing the net and I discovered a site which lists podcasts in various categories and after listening to some,I found one called “Stuff You Missed in History Class“. It’s put on by the website “How Stuff Works”and is really fun to listen to. The last two nights,I’ve found myself unable to get up and head to bed until way too late because I can’t stop listening. By Granny,on January 3rd,2011 On Christmas Day,I travelled across the mainland (Surrey to Aldergrove) to spend the rest of Christmas with some of my oldest friends who my daughter and I had lived with about half a lifetime ago. Several other old friends were in attendance and it was a really happy Christmas with so much laughter, good food and great conversation. It’s one of those Christmas’s that I will never forget. Some friends I see regularly but some it’s a rare time to see them. So much fun. This photo is cheating as it was taken at my birthday party. But unfortunately I haven’t received any of the photos from Christmas yet. By Granny,on January 3rd,2011 Once again I find myself travelling at Christmas. Not far but enough to remind me of the yearly travails to my family years ago. This year (for the second year in a row) I was invited to my son in law’s family’s home to celebrate a Danish Christmas Yes,those are real candles on the tree. A traditional Danish custom. My favourite part was,of course, seeing all of the family who I hadn’t seen since my birthday in late September. My daughter is once again very pregnant, due to have her second child in early March. One last pleasure,My son in law’s mother is the most amazing cook. Since this was the second year,I learned from last year that it is wise not to eat quite as much as I was tempted to. By Granny,on May 26th,2010 Living in a very rural area,we have lots and lots of spiders in our houses. Now spiders don’t bother me at all. I grew up in a house that had those huge ones and here they’re mostly cobweb spiders who aren’t very big at all. Today my friend,Christie told me that if you want to get the spiders to back off,all you have to do is set chestnuts around the house. Who would have thought. So I did some googling and found about half the results said, yes, chestnuts work great for spiders and the other half said it’s a myth. My thoughts …. can’t hurt to try. Chestnuts are free. Why would I do this when spiders don’t bother me. Have you ever seen how many cobwebs these spiders can make in a short time? They are all over the place. By Granny,on May 26th,2010 A couple of months ago,Charlie became part of our family which includes three cats and myself. Every morning we take a short walk up the road and a couple of weeks ago,my cat Calvin decided it would be fun to join us. So almost every morning, the three of us wander up the road together. Yesterday morning,Calvin’s mother,Zoey sat at the end of the driveway and meowed from the time we left until we returned and this morning she decided to join us. I wonder if any of my neighbours were looking out their window and what they would think. Someone has to hide in the bush and take a picture. By Granny,on May 25th,2010 Every year there is a great May Day celebration here which includes lots of dancing, music, food,a parade and the traditional May Pole Dance. Check out Toby Snelgrove’s photos. By Granny,on May 25th,2010 Today my sister read my last post and she found and scanned my mother’s recipe. Here it is. For those of you who are unable to translate my Mum’s handwriting, I will type it out. Magic Garden 6 tbsp salt 6 tbsp liquid blueing 6 tbsp water 1 tbsp ammonica Pour over broken bricks, coal, stones etc. Rub sides of shallow dish with vaseline. (I remember my mother used a glass or pyrex pie plate. ) By Granny,on May 24th,2010 When I was a little girl,my mother would make what she called Magic Gardens. I remember being awestruck at how beautiful they were. I don’t know what happened to her recipe but after doing a bit of research online,I found instructions. If you’re a granny, your grandchildren will love this. Crystal Magic Garden Link Here’s a slightly different recipe By Granny,on May 23rd,2010 My Father during WW2 I started the Hogg Surname Centre at the end last millenium. It was a lot of fun to put together and in the process I met lots of Hoggs and even some distant relatives. Lately it’s been hard to keep up with the updates. Still it’s a good site if your last name is Hogg. Hope you enjoy it. By Granny,on May 23rd,2010 It’s Saturday of the May long weekend and once again the crowds descend on my little island. After having enjoyed having Dinner Bay park to myself for the last couple of months when I take Charlie there 4 or 5 days a week, today we were surrounded by crowds. Must have been at least 20 people there. Can you believe it? And those city dogs didn’t want to play with poor little Charlie who was really excited to see them. | GrannyhoodGrowing up,I never had a grandmother close. One was in Germany and the other was in Scotland. I was in Canada. So not having a role model,it's all completely new to me and I LOVE IT. It's so much fun having these lovely little babies to play with. Still learning what being a Granny is all about. | |
