By Granny,on April 4th,2011 Have been on Twitter for about a year now and I’m still trying to figure out how people follow it all. I have about 80 people that I am following and about the same number are following me. In the last hour, there were about 35 tweets. So how on earth do people following 100s and even 1000s of people keep up with it all. Very confusing. I can only imagine that people get very very good and scanning and ignoring. By Granny,on April 1st,2011 My daughter called today to let me know that she had a whole five hours sleep last night. (In a row). She was feeling pretty happy and had more good news. Last night Matty peed in his potty for the first time. All the small things that make us so happy. And,I’ve added a couple of photos of Jedda to the Header Image. By Granny,on March 31st,2011 So I was sitting and thinking about my new granddaughter just now. Her mum and dad call her Jedda which is a name that I’ve never heard before. Apparently Allan met a woman with the name and really liked it and it went from there. So Wikipedia said:about Jeddah also known as Jedda There are at least two explanations for the etymology of the name Jeddah, according to Jeddah Ibn Helwaan Al-Qudaa’iy,the chief of the Quda’a clan. The more common account has it that the name is derived from جده Jaddah, the Arabic word for “grandmother”. According to eastern folk belief, the tomb of Eve (21°29′31″N 39°11′24″E / 21.49194°N 39.19°E / 21.49194;39.19),considered the grandmother of humanity,is located in Jeddah.[4] The Tomb was sealed with concrete by the religious authorities in 1975 as a result of some Muslims praying at the site. Ibn Battuta, the Berber traveller, visited Jeddah during his world trip. He wrote the name of the city into his diary as “Juddah”.[5] The British Foreign Office and other branches of the British government used to use the older spelling of “Jedda”,contrary to other English-speaking usage, but in 2007 changed to the spelling “Jeddah”.[6] T. E. Lawrence felt that any transcription of Arabic names into English was arbitrary. In his book Revolt in the Desert,Jeddah is spelled three different ways on the first page alone.[7] On official Saudi maps and documents, the city name is transcribed “Jeddah”,which is now the prevailing usage. Jeddah,Saudi Arabia From Saudi.net I found the following: The name Jeddah meaning the “Ancestor of Women” is attributable to the tomb in the city which is believed to belong to Eve. Today,it is not however possible to see that interesting place since the Saudi Arabian government had the tomb destroyed for the reason that it would instigate perversions in the religion. Jeddah which gained importance during the Ottoman rule, was incorporated into the Kingdom of Hejaz and later came under the British control. It joined the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 1927. I also found a movie named Jedda which takes place in Australia where the title character is Australian. Some baby name sites say it is an Australian name and others say it is an English name. Several of the baby name sites had no meaning listed though a couple said it meant “Jet Black Stone”. By Granny,on March 14th,2011 On March 6th,2011 at 5:15 in the morning,I watched my daughter give birth to a precious baby girl. All went well and exceedingly quickly. Little Jedda Elizabeth Doll is doing well as are her proud parents. I was able to spend a few days helping out and plan to go back later in the month to help some more. Now I have a boy and a girl to play with. I am happy beyond belief. The Proud Family. Me and Jedda. Day One This is me looking smug after not sleeping for 24 hours. By Granny,on March 1st,2011 So I’m on my way to Nanaimo tomorrow to spend time with Amanda until the baby comes and will come home after she comes home. I’ve made all the arrangements,I’m half way packed and only need to finish that off and get to the store and the mailbox. Hopefully she’ll wait until I get there. Finger’s crossed and Darling, keep your legs crossed until tomorrow afternoon. By Granny,on March 1st,2011 Just heard from my daughter that the doctor told her today that she is getting very close to giving birth. He said a ride down a bumpy road would do the trick. Me,I’m frantically trying to get things done on this side of the water just in case I may have to jump on the next ferry. By Granny,on February 18th,2011
Seems like only yesterday,my daughter was a little girl and today she’s a grown woman with a son and another child on the way. Where did all the time go? I’m very proud of my daughter for many, many reasons. These days I find myself asking for her advice because she has so much wisdom. I’m sending her wishes for a great year and hoping that I will be living close by very soon so that I can be there to help with both babies. Can hardly wait for the fun to begin. This photo was taken of her when she was a tiny girl wearing a bag from her Grandma and Grandpa’s bookshop. It hung in the store for many years. By Granny,on January 19th,2011 So yesterday my daughter posted on Facebook that she and her husband were having a problem agreeing on baby names. (Baby #2 is due on March 9th) As a rabid genealogist,I immediately went into my family tree and looked for family names. They’re first child was given a Danish name and my father’s name for his middle name which would have pleased my Dad no end. It certainly did me. According to Scottish naming tradition, the first girl should be named after the mother’s mother so that would be my name. I like that. If I had followed that tradition,my daughter’s name should have been Helene. The one great thing about this tradition is that it makes it fairly easy to find relatives. My father,James, was the first son of Robert, who was the first son of James, who was the first son of Robert and so on and so on. So you get a lot of the same names popping up over and over again. Some of my daughter’s friends came up with some truly horrible names. What would I do if they came up with a name that I really don’t like. I never thought about that. And what is going on with the weird spellings that people are using these days. Although I have an unusual name,I rarely have to spell it out for anyone. I think that could get quite annoying after a while. I know that I use my middle name and whenever I’m dealing with some government body they always call me by my first name which irritates me a lot. I was thinking about names recently and wondered about Queen Latifah’s name. I wonder if that’s a stage name or her real name. I like the idea of being called Queen. Maybe I should suggest that. So anyway the most unusual name that I found in my family tree was my grandmother’s father’s name –Ignatz. I wonder if Iggy Pop’s name was Ignatz? By Granny,on January 10th,2011 A while back my friend Marilyn had driven up Vancouver Island to attend a funeral of a close friend. On the way back to Victoria where she lives, she stopped at my daughter’s house when I was visiting. She and her husband were delighted to meet Mathias,my grandson, and she said it was “Baby Therapy”which helped to raise her from her grief over her lost friend. During A Celebration of Carole's Life Yesterday,my daughter and Matty arrived on my little island to attend the funeral and Celebration of Life of her friend and mentor,Carole who had passed away from cancer earlier in the week at the young age of 51. Carole was involved in the Little Theatre Group here on the island and joined about the same time my daughter did. My daughter eventually went on to study Stage Management after having much support from members of the group, especially Carole. Here’s my baby therapy moment. By Granny,on January 3rd,2011 I have a long list of songs to sing to children in my head from my childhood but am always looking for new ones and found a long list of them here. | GrannyhoodGrowing up,I never had a grandmother close. One was in Germany and the other was in Scotland. I was in Canada. So not having a role model,it's all completely new to me and I LOVE IT. It's so much fun having these lovely little babies to play with. Still learning what being a Granny is all about. | |
