Origami Fortune Teller

I loved making these and playing with them when I was small.   I never knew the name for them until about five minutes ago when I came across a photo of one online.

origami fortune tellerI found a link with the instuctions on how to make them.   Check it out.  Great game to teach your grandchildren.   Easy and fun.

Magic Potion

How about making ice cubes using coloured Koolaid and then putting the cubes in a clear drink like Sprite or Ginger Ale.   Just found this online and love the idea.

Post Halloween

Once again it was a quiet Halloween at my house.   Not a child in sight.

My sister and her husband make up for it.   They love to decorate for Halloween.   Here’s a link to a little tour of Castle Hope.

This year was the first year that Matty went trick or treating.   Since he loved last year’s Dragon costume so much,he got to wear it again though he refused to wear the head.    And our precious little girl became a Halloween Teddy Bear.

Halloween is close approaching

Looking back to my own childhood,  I remember going off to trick or treat.    When I was about 6,  I went as Zorro but I insisted that I needed to wear earrings.   Later when I was between 8 and 10,we lived in a community in North Vancouver called Norgate park.    My favourite stop was at the house at the end of the block where the woman made candy apples and she would invite us in and we would see her making them and then she would let us choose which one we wanted.   Yum.    So good.   Not sure that people can do that anymore.   Still remember wondering if she would notice if I knocked on her door twice.    Then when I turned 10,we moved to a new neighbourhood in Upper Lonsdale, where we were told not to knock on the door of the house kiddy corner to us.    The people were mean and a ghost lived there.   Or so the story went.

Then I was a mother and we moved to a small island.   In the 23 years here,  I have only had kids knock on my door maybe twice.   The tradition here is to go to the Halloween party put on by the Firemen.    They have hot dogs, hot chocolate and a huge roaring bonfire.   There are games and contests for the kids and believe or not,the first year we went,  I won the prize for best costume.    I did make a very good witch.  <grin>

The photo next to this,is my daughter, the Halloween Leopard, which I think was 1988.    Most years,we would celebrate the day at the Firehall but on occasions,we would find our way off island and she would be able to experience trick or treating.

Matty was a dinosaur last year.

I am really looking forward to this year.   I have already tried to convince them that Halloween on Mayne Island is the place to be but unfortunately this year it’s on Monday and messes with work schedules etc.     And I forgot to mention that Halloween party always ends with fireworks which are organized and set off my my son in law’s brother,Per.   Click here to watch it.

My Genius Grandson

My daughter has been telling me lately that Matty has been obsessive with letters lately.   Her friend had bought him a game with all the letters of the alphabet where you can take the letter out of the game and then put another one in and a voice says the letter over and over again.    I’m told that suddenly Matty twigged to the fact that there are letters everywhere and he has been saying the letters that he remembers when he sees them.

So today, she posted a video that shows our clever little boy saying most of the alphabet.  CLick the link below to check it out.

Bouncing Baby

I have decided that they should make these bouncy things for adults.  I would like one in my living room.

A New World

My front porchIn the midst of the flurry of decluttering my house and getting it ready to put on the market,a couple of major changes happened.   First,  I decided to take all blinds and curtains down from the windows.   It brightened up the interior of the house a lot and I felt much more connected to the world outside.    The second thing that happened was that I decided to stop smoking in the house.  So for the past three weeks, when it’s time for a cigarette,  I move out to the front porch.

Some interesting changes have resulted from this.   For the first time since I started my business,I am getting up from the computer and taking breaks.   I’m also much more in touch with the nature outside my house.   I watch the birds swooping about, the butterflies crowding around my Buddlea (Butterfly Bush),a small treefrog that came to visit and I see my neighbours in their gardens and walking around the point.    I’ve also cut down on my smoking which is a good thing.    And my favourite change is that I am thinking more while I sit out on the deck.  I intentionally don’t bring out anything to read or do and just think.    The realization hit me that prior to these changes,  I was usually staring at a screen (computer or tv),reading,or talking on the phone.   In younger days,I loved thinking and would sit for long periods of time ruminating about life etc.    Thinking about it now,  I think I stopped the habit when I became a mother.  I was always running about chasing a little girl and had little time to just sit and meditate anymore.     And then of course, right around the time,my daughter graduated from high school and moved out,  I was busy starting a business and thought only about that for many years.

It’s an interesting dynamic how changes begets change and these two simple changes have brought me back to such a simple habit that I enjoy so much.

Looking for Santa Claus

My daughter just sent me this video.   I dare you not to laugh.

Grannyhood

Growing up,I never had a grandmother close. One was in Germany and the other was in Scotland. I was in Canada.

So not having a role model,it's all completely new to me and I LOVE IT. It's so much fun having these lovely little babies to play with. Still learning what being a Granny is all about.
