By Granny,on July 20th,2011% I’ve been busy for the last few weeks. My daughter posted some wonderful new photos of the children together and thought I would share with you. Pretty adorable, yes. I’m planning a trip up there at the beginning of August. Can’t wait as it’s been far too long since I’ve been there. Marty is just over 22 months now and Jedda is 4 months. How did that happen? By Granny,on June 8th,2011% My son in law is a huge hockey (read Vancouver Canucks) fan and in the past few years my daughter has also joined the rabid fan movement. My grandchildren have Canucks shirts, pjs, hats etc. The photo here is from last year. There was great joy in the family when little 21 month old Matty said “Hockey”the other night. And below find a video of little 3 month old Jedda is already getting lessons in Canuck fever. Jedda cheering for the Canucks after we won against Boston! [HQ] By Granny,on May 20th,2011% Matty has decided to start walking since I was last there in April. My daughter finally sent me a video. I thought I would share it with you. Video of Matty playing and walking –May 2011 By Granny,on March 1st,2011% Just heard from my daughter that the doctor told her today that she is getting very close to giving birth. He said a ride down a bumpy road would do the trick. Me,I’m frantically trying to get things done on this side of the water just in case I may have to jump on the next ferry. By Granny,on January 19th,2011% So yesterday my daughter posted on Facebook that she and her husband were having a problem agreeing on baby names. (Baby #2 is due on March 9th) As a rabid genealogist,I immediately went into my family tree and looked for family names. They’re first child was given a Danish name and my father’s name for his middle name which would have pleased my Dad no end. It certainly did me. According to Scottish naming tradition, the first girl should be named after the mother’s mother so that would be my name. I like that. If I had followed that tradition,my daughter’s name should have been Helene. The one great thing about this tradition is that it makes it fairly easy to find relatives. My father,James, was the first son of Robert, who was the first son of James, who was the first son of Robert and so on and so on. So you get a lot of the same names popping up over and over again. Some of my daughter’s friends came up with some truly horrible names. What would I do if they came up with a name that I really don’t like. I never thought about that. And what is going on with the weird spellings that people are using these days. Although I have an unusual name,I rarely have to spell it out for anyone. I think that could get quite annoying after a while. I know that I use my middle name and whenever I’m dealing with some government body they always call me by my first name which irritates me a lot. I was thinking about names recently and wondered about Queen Latifah’s name. I wonder if that’s a stage name or her real name. I like the idea of being called Queen. Maybe I should suggest that. So anyway the most unusual name that I found in my family tree was my grandmother’s father’s name –Ignatz. I wonder if Iggy Pop’s name was Ignatz? By Granny,on January 10th,2011% A while back my friend Marilyn had driven up Vancouver Island to attend a funeral of a close friend. On the way back to Victoria where she lives, she stopped at my daughter’s house when I was visiting. She and her husband were delighted to meet Mathias,my grandson, and she said it was “Baby Therapy”which helped to raise her from her grief over her lost friend. During A Celebration of Carole's Life Yesterday,my daughter and Matty arrived on my little island to attend the funeral and Celebration of Life of her friend and mentor,Carole who had passed away from cancer earlier in the week at the young age of 51. Carole was involved in the Little Theatre Group here on the island and joined about the same time my daughter did. My daughter eventually went on to study Stage Management after having much support from members of the group, especially Carole. Here’s my baby therapy moment. By Granny,on January 3rd,2011% I have a long list of songs to sing to children in my head from my childhood but am always looking for new ones and found a long list of them here. By Granny,on January 3rd,2011% On Christmas Day,I travelled across the mainland (Surrey to Aldergrove) to spend the rest of Christmas with some of my oldest friends who my daughter and I had lived with about half a lifetime ago. Several other old friends were in attendance and it was a really happy Christmas with so much laughter, good food and great conversation. It’s one of those Christmas’s that I will never forget. Some friends I see regularly but some it’s a rare time to see them. So much fun. This photo is cheating as it was taken at my birthday party. But unfortunately I haven’t received any of the photos from Christmas yet. By Granny,on January 3rd,2011% Once again I find myself travelling at Christmas. Not far but enough to remind me of the yearly travails to my family years ago. This year (for the second year in a row) I was invited to my son in law’s family’s home to celebrate a Danish Christmas Yes,those are real candles on the tree. A traditional Danish custom. My favourite part was,of course, seeing all of the family who I hadn’t seen since my birthday in late September. My daughter is once again very pregnant, due to have her second child in early March. One last pleasure,My son in law’s mother is the most amazing cook. Since this was the second year,I learned from last year that it is wise not to eat quite as much as I was tempted to. By Granny,on May 21st,2010% My darling daughter posts videos on Facebook to make her mother happy. Funny [HQ] –Matty –May 2010 | GrannyhoodGrowing up,I never had a grandmother close. One was in Germany and the other was in Scotland. I was in Canada. So not having a role model,it's all completely new to me and I LOVE IT. It's so much fun having these lovely little babies to play with. Still learning what being a Granny is all about. | |
